The 2006 Shingo Research Prizes included the two books Lean Solutions, by James P. Womack and Daniel T. Jones, and The Gold Mine,"by Freddy Balle and Michael Balle. Both books, published by the Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI), received the prizes during the 18th annual Shingo Prize Conference. The Shingo Research Prize recognizes research and writing on new knowledge and understanding of lean manufacturing. The prize's philosophy is that world-class business performance may be achieved through focused improvements in core manufacturing and business processes. All the 2006 research prize recipients are listed below.

2006 Recipients - Books

Andy & Me – Crisis and Transformation on the Lean Journey, by Pascal Dennis, is a business novel set in a failing New Jersey auto plant based on the author’s personal experience with Toyota senseis and companies executing lean transformations. On this journey, the reader learns that TPS is more than just a collection of tools; it entails a new way of thinking and behaving.

 Creating a Lean Culture – Tools to Sustain Lean Conversions, by David Mann, details the critical factor so often overlooked is that lean implantation requires day-to-day, hour-by-hour management practices and skills with which leaders in conventional batch-and-queue environments are neither familiar nor comfortable. Mann provides critical guidance on developing and using the key elements of a lean management system.

Lean Production Simplified – A Plain Language Guide to the World’s Most Powerful Production System, by Pascal Dennis, delivers a comprehensive “insider’s” view of each components of lean within the context of the entire production system. The author presents the system as a whole and the factors that animate it in a straightforward common-sense approach that makes this book an easily accessible resource.

Lean Solutions – How Companies and Customers Can Create Value and Wealth Together, by James P. Womack and Daniel T. Jones, extends their prior work in lean provision by incorporating lean consumption, thus defining the producer-consumer responsibilities in a variety of industries. In this landmark book, the authors deconstruct this broken producer-consumer process and show businesses how to repair it, through attention to six simple principles of lean consumption.

The Gold Mine: A Novel of Lean Turnaround, by Freddy Ballé and Michael Ballé, is a business novel that weaves together the technical and human pieces of implementing lean manufacturing in an engaging story. The book is enlightening on the first pass, and has sufficient depth for readers to find more subtle gems on the second and third read.

The Toyota Way Fieldbook, by Jeffrey Liker and David Meier, provides additional details of the concepts of the Toyota way and practical examples for application that leads need to bring Toyota’s success-proven practices to life in any organization. The depth of detail provided draws on the authors’ combined experience of coaching and supporting companies in lean transformation.

Training Within Industry: The Foundation of Lean, by Donald A. Dinero, explores a crucial piece of lean systems often overlooked throughout U.S. industry. Readers will see that standardized work imparts measurable continuous improvement because it sets a framework for efficiency and innovation. A CD of the original TWI bulletins issued by the U.S. government in the 1940s is included.

Visual Workplace – Visual Thinking: Creating Enterprise Excellence Through the Technologies of the Visual Workplace, by Gwendolyn Galsworth, presents a comprehensive treatment of the basic principles and concepts underlying a visual approach in the workplace as well as the components of the powerful cultural conversion that typically results. This book captures the basic building blocks of the visual approach as well as some of the little-known perspectives on workplace visuality, including the true relationship between visual and lean.
